Celebrity Philanthropy: Holly Robinson Peete

McDonald’s will join hundreds of mothers of color gathering in Atlanta this Saturday, August 4th, to celebrate the Mocha Moms 10th anniversary of being the premiere support group for stay-at-home mothers of color. During the conference, McDonald’s will host actress Holly Robinson-Peete, a mother of four, who will speak to these dynamic women about the importance of maintaining a balanced, active lifestyle while caring for their children and families. Robinson-Peete’s participation in the Mocha Moms conference is part of McDonald’s outreach to moms during the summer of 2007. This event is just one of the many causes that actress, author and philanthropist Holly Robinson-Peete contributes her time to:

On July 21st, Holly and her husband, former NFL quarterback Rodney Peete, hosted DesignCare (formerly DesignCure), an annual fundraising event for their HollyRod Foundation:

This year, 500 guests gathered at the home of Tammy & Eric Gustavson in Malibu, California for a silent auction and fashion show. Morris Day and the Time provided musical entertainment. The event attracted many high profile names, such as Quincy Jones, Chris Tucker and Jim Carrey. The foundation, created in honor of Holly's father to support individuals with Parkinson's Disease, has expanded its mission to other causes, including helping victims of hurricane Katrina.
Holly supports many causes, among them:

The Peetes were also among a group of celebrities and notables who accompanied Oprah Winfrey to South Africa for the opening of Oprah's new leadership school for girls. Essence magazine interviewed Holly earlier this year and described her enthusiasm of that moment:
Holly glows with excitement at the idea of Oprah giving such an enormous gift to a population that has so little, a present that will endure for generations to come. It is a thrill she gets in some measure from running HollyRod Foundation, the nonprofit she and her husband, Rodney Peete, founded ten years ago to assist those living with Parkinson’s disease.

“Marian Wright Edelman said, ‘Service is the rent we pay for living,’ ” says Holly. “I love that. Running a nonprofit can be rough, but a philanthropic high is like no other. It’s all about balance.”
