MIAMI: The Miami-Dade Chamber of Commerce will host its 3rd Annual Holiday Gala, “Diving into an Ocean of Opportunities,” on Saturday December 6, 2008 at the Hyatt Regency in Downtown Miami. The event will honor three of South Florida’s Black business and philanthropic leaders. A cocktail reception will begin at 6:00 p.m., and dinner and award ceremony will follow at 8:00 pm. The “oceanic” themed social event is expected to draw over 700 of South Florida’s savviest and most successful business minds.
Among the honorees are Civil Rights Attorney H.T. Smith, the first African-American Assistant Public Defender and the first African-American Assistant County Attorney in Miami; Tracy Wilson-Mourning, founder of the Honey Shine Mentoring Program – a program committed to the development and nurturing of at-risk young women; and Dr. Eduardo J. PadrĂ³n, president of Miami-Dade College, the largest institution of higher education in the United States. Comedian Huggy Lowdown of HOT 105 and the Tom Joyner Morning Show will serve as the evening’s special guest host.

NEW YORK: On Friday, November 28, 2008 from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., The Learning Tree Cultural Preparatory School (TLT) will hold its 2nd Book Fair at the Barnes and Noble Baychester Plaza, 290 Baychester Ave, Bronx, NY. All events are free and open to the public!
They have a wonderful day planned with activities for the entire community. The Learning Tree's African Drummers will open the book fair at 10 a.m. followed by an afternoon of readings by children's authors. Among the activities:
11 a.m.: Author Lonnetta M. Taylor-Gaines, Fia and the Butterfly (Reading/Signing)
12:30 p.m.: Author Renee Jones of Reading Strategies: A Guide for Parents and Caregivers (30 minute workshop for parents and caregivers - quick and easy reading techniques)
3:30 p.m.: Be A Father to Your Child: Real Talk From Black Men On Family, Love and Fatherhood (A book signing and discussion...hip hop style)
7 p.m.: Danny Simmons, author of '85. Simmons is a renowned painter of abstract-expressionist oil works, owns the Rush Arts Gallery in Manhattan and the Corridor Gallery in Brooklyn. He heads the Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation with his brother, Russell Simmons.
