‘MANHOOD 101: Navigating Toward Success’ Empowers Male Minority Youth

LOS ANGELES – In an effort to educate and elevate high school-aged minority male youth, West Angeles Community Development Corporation (WACDC) has announced their newest initiative, Manhood 101: Navigating toward Success.

Tunua Thrash, Executive Director of WACDC believes that, “Many people quote the African proverb ‘It takes a village to raise a child,’ but in times like these it takes an entire community to prepare a generation of young people. The future of our community rests in the dreams, ambitions, and actions of our youth.”

On Saturday, September 15, 2012 at the West Angeles Villas in Los Angeles, WACDC hosted Manhood 101, a youth empowerment conference aimed toward addressing the issues facing minority youth within their communities through empowerment and the cultivation of success in their lives. Young men were engaged in topics ranging from spirituality to health and wellness to cultivating academic success.

Guest industry power players included: Dr. Juan Carrillo, Ph.D, Assistant Professor at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill; Elder Ryan Sims, Youth and Young Adult Pastor of The Dwelling Place Church of God in Christ; Romal Tune, Founder and Executive Director of Faith for Change; and Dr. E. Emel, M.D., lead pediatrician of Kaiser Permanente. The event was sponsored by Walmart, Southern California Gas Company and the Employees Community Fund of Boeing California.
